Janhavi kharche, a 4 year old sweet little girl came to us in a very bad shape with an accident injuring her left knee. This knee got infected and it spread through her blood blocking the blood vessels of her leg and spreading to her lungs. (Septic arthritis with septic thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism). She had difficulty breathing… With multispecialty collaborative efforts her infected knee was operated, the blood vessel clots were taken care of by blood thinners, she was on ventilatory therapy for 10 days. With the dedicated efforts of PICU team she did well and we could be a part a turning point in her life that could have otherwise met a tragic end This is her photo when we discharged her… the smile on her parents face make us feel good about our Work.
First of its kind case of Fetal cytokine storm (post covid complication) – Mother had suffered from covid 45 days before delivery. She underwent caesarean and a healthy 3 kg female baby was born. This child had hematuria (blood in urine) with sudden drop of Hemoglobin, renal vein thrombosis (blood clot in the blood vessels of kidney). Timely investigations revealed it was post covid multi-organ involvement in the baby that had occurred in utero (when baby was in mother’s womb). Appropriate timely medications (steroids and intravenous immunoglobulins, Heparin infusion- blood thinner drug to dissolve the blood clot), led to improvement of medical condition and saved the life of the baby. This baby is now 10 month old, healthy like any other baby. This was one of the first cases in India during COVID times. COVID positive mothers were delivered in the most appropriate isolation environment and babies were treated in separate isolated area created in the NICU with dedicated staff in wearing appropriate PPE kits all equipped to delivery care to these babies following the then relevant care guidelines.
30 preterm babies (born before completing 9 months of gestation) weighing between 800 grams to 1.5 grams were treated successfully and are currently in follow up with us… We were able to bring a smile on the faces of their parents by nurturing there premies into healthy neonates who will now live a normal life ahead. All of this was possible only with dedicated NICU team efforts.
GOVIND GANESH KHANDRE , A 34 year old male patient, diagnosed to have multiple facial bone fractures due to crush injury....his both maxilla, nasal bones and orbital bones and frontal bones were crushed to small pieces due to penetrating injury. Clinically patient had disfigured face, reduced mouth opening, inability to chew food, telecanthus and dish face appearance. He was operated under general anaesthesia using submental intubation having difficult airway to manage. Operation went for 10 hours including, intermaxillary fixation to obtain occlusion, anatomical reduction of each piece of fractured bone using open reduction and internal fixation. Oculoplasty was done to reduce the telecanthus one of the highly skilled and difficult procedure. Surgery went very smoothly and uneventful with intense cooperation of anaesthetists and OT brothers. At the end of surgery we could manage the 95 % original facial appearance of the patient with above satisfactory mouth opening and chewing function of the jaws. Cosmetically patient was happy with smiling faces. We thank almighty for healthy recovery of patient with happy face.
